The CEM Program has been designed as a robust program for tight scheduled business owners of existing businesses and those still in full time employment considering engaging the venturing process. The program will develop and strengthen their entrepreneurial and managerial capabilities.
a) To engage those who are considering the venturing process to have a smooth learning experience while still in employment.
b) To set the foundation for the implementation of suitable systems and structures to ensure long-term sustainability of entrepreneurial ventures.
c) To help the Entrepreneur and her organization to be better prepared in accessing finance for growth.
d) Provide the networks for access to new markets to deliver valuable products and services.
The program will be delivered in modular form which will be further categorized into the online and class structure. This modular structure allows entrepreneurs to spread their skill development over a period of four months, 15days online and 15days in class, making the program compatible with their work schedules and giving them time to implement the action plans they draw from each course in their businesses. Management of Enterprise Development Centre (EDC) and it’s in house experts will be prepared to provide assistance in implementing these action plans to the participants.
The CEM Blended program is designed to give flexibility to the already existing full time CEM program and aid learning in the unconventional way. This program will run for 30 days and will be delivered through the following platforms:
Online e-learning platform (15days)
Classroom Sessions (15days), spread over a period of 4 months.
Experienced Faculties of the Centre have worked with the Program Designer at the Centre, and have shared their experience and expertise in creating a content of global standard. They also assisted in the writing of the local case studies that will be used in most of the modules.
Introduction to Entrepreneurship
This module introduces the entrepreneurship certificate program and serves as a useful foundation for subsequent modules on the program. Participants are exposed to the types of entrepreneurs that exist, their traits and the venturing process.
Legal, Regulatory and Tax Matters
Entrepreneurs in pursuing their vision must not loose sight of the regulatory environment within which they must operate. In addition, their legal status and tax matters must be carefully planned, irrespective of organizational size. This Module takes the entrepreneur through those essential steps that must be critically examined to have a structured organization, minimize unnecessary payments, protect their investments and position them as good corporate citizens. Topics discussed on this module include the process involved in establishing a business in Nigeria, Company structure, board, accountability of management, Techniques of negotiation, Law of Contracts, Tax system of Nigeria.
Making Operations Faster, Better and Cheaper
For organizations to compete effectively, they must produce or provide their services faster, better and cheaper than competition. These are the key pillars of productivity. Integrating these into the operations of any firm transforms it into a cost efficient and operationally effective organization. Participants will learn how to identify and remove operational bottlenecks so that their organizations can be highly responsive to the industry they operate in. Understand what operations management is, its functions and be able to apply the knowledge/skills to manage business processes for better performance.
Sales and Marketing
Having a fantastic product is no longer enough; a clear plan on how to make it available at the market place and beat competition is critical to the bottom-line. Also to be constantly relevant in the market place, entrepreneurs must understand the market dynamics and how his organization fits in. Topics such as the concept of marketing, the marketing mix, Market segmentation, Marketing Communications, Branding for Entrepreneurs, Developing a winning marketing strategy, selling techniques etc. This module helps to develop all these topics into a workable plan.
Developing Financial Records
One of the greatest hindrances to SME funding and indeed growth is undoubtedly the inadequate keeping of Business records. Even when such records are kept, they are often not available in a format that helps the entrepreneur make quality decisions. Similarly, investors and funding organizations are not able to make meaningful conclusions with respect to the enterprise- thus denying the enterprise of the much-needed capital for growth. This module has been designed to be hands-on, at the end of which participants are expected to develop usable financial recording system for their firms and how this process can be automated and sustained.
People make it happen
If getting the right people is considered a challenge, motivating employees of small organizations to think and work like the entrepreneur is even a greater challenge. Yet, people make it happen! This module will help participants understand how to recruit good people, train and retain them. In addition, it will also help participants understand how to motivate their employees in order to unleash their potentials for organizational growth. Topics such as Recruitment process, Performance Appraisal, Staff Welfare and Benefits, Managing Workplace Conflicts, etc. will be discussed in this module.
For businesses to outlive its founder, the entrepreneur must learn how to transit his firm from an entrepreneurial to a professionally managed firm. His leadership qualities, the building of a strong management team and his ability to motivate his employees to buy into his vision are a few of the elements that makes the business outlives him. Apart from examining all these in this module, attention will also be given to the communication process.

One of the biggest challenges small enterprises face is that of short-term orientation. However, in order to be truly successful, organizations (especially small businesses) must think long-term. Strategies for growth has been designed to assist participants develop a conceptual framework for the planning process, build competitive edge to outperform competitors and above all, learn ways of effective implementation of these long-term plans. Computer-based strategy simulation will help participants sharpen their strategic planning abilities.

Meeting Customers’ expectations is now regarded as the basic minimum. Exceeding their expectations and making service “memorable” is fast becoming the new standard for customer-focused organizations. In this module, you will learn how understanding their needs and going the extra mile to exceeding them makes the difference to your relevance in the marketplace and the ultimate sustainability of your organization.
Using Technology to outperform Competition
In today’s information age, no business can survive without the use of technology. Increasingly, small businesses are competing effectively with large organizations through the use of appropriate technology. This module will help participants focus on how ICT strategy can be deployed in every facet of the business, leading to cost reduction, efficient organization and overall business growth.
The module will examine the moral, ethical principles and issues that arise in the business environment. The module will also examine the Perception of Business, Corporate Social Responsibility to the Society, the roles and responsibility of business principles of business morality.
Preparing your Business Plan
Many business concepts never go beyond the “Idea” stage. Even for functional businesses, they tend to lose focus during implementation. Developing a business plan helps participants to rigorously think through their business concept and develop a roadmap with specific milestones from the concept to the functional stage. This module will help entrepreneurs develop not just a business plan but unfolds what must be done for a successful implementation.
In a highly dynamic market, business owners’ responsiveness is important to the changing market situations and the business success. Their responsiveness is determined by the level of preparedness to tackle the various business hurdles.
This module will expose the participants to effective presentation skills, Negotiation skills, Conflict Resolutions, and Decision-making techniques.
The program is hands-on. Consequently, after every module, participants have time to implement whatever has been learnt in class.
